The Challenge
The Australian 4WD market is one of the most competitive automotive categories, dominated by the Toyota LandCruiser with a 77% share. While the Nissan Patrol was respected for its capability, it wasn’t the default choice. The issue wasn’t awareness—it was consideration. We were at 48.1% consideration versus LandCruiser’s 84.8%, and just 8.9% as first choice. Buyers simply weren’t spending enough time engaging with the brand to reconsider entrenched preferences. At the same time, consumer behavior was shifting. Niche gaming communities, particularly Geoguessr, were growing rapidly. These players spend time analyzing terrain, landscapes, and geographic clues—behavior that closely mirrors the mindset of 4WD enthusiasts. Traditional advertising wasn’t going to shift loyalty in a category defined by habit and heritage. We needed to create deep, active engagement with high-intent audiences—not passive awareness. Our challenge was to move beyond messaging and create an experience that would drive real consideration, engagement, and ultimately sales.
The Solution
We transformed a car launch into a live, nationwide game. We hid a brand-new Nissan Patrol somewhere in Australia with a simple proposition: find it, and keep it. Using Geoguessr-style mechanics, we released three cryptic landscape clues through geo-gaming creator Oscar Pearce on Discord and YouTube. Players analyzed terrain, vegetation, and satellite imagery to pinpoint the exact location—no simplification, no gimmicks, just authentic gameplay. We designed the campaign to live within gaming culture, not interrupt it. Discord communities, Reddit threads, and 4WD forums became active hubs of collaboration and competition. As players narrowed the search, the experience moved from digital to real-world exploration, with participants traveling to find the vehicle. By aligning gameplay with Patrol’s core strength—conquering extreme terrain—we made the product experience tangible. Gaming became our conversion engine, turning passive audiences into active participants. Every clue deepened engagement, every interaction built consideration, and the final reward created a powerful direct response mechanic.
