The Challenge

Gatorade has spent decades fueling the greatest athletes of all time, making it the #1 sports drink in the world. But that success created a barrier: the perception that Gatorade is only for traditional athletes. To grow, we needed to break into broader culture and redefine what it means to be an athlete—proving that performance and hydration don’t stop when the whistle blows. At the same time, Netflix’s Stranger Things was returning for its final season—one of the most-watched series globally. It presented a unique cultural opportunity, blending a new generation’s fandom with Gatorade’s 1980s heritage. Eleven, the show’s protagonist, embodied resilience, sacrifice, and performance under pressure—values deeply aligned with the brand. Our challenge was to make Gatorade essential to this cultural moment, not just present in it.

The Solution

We went beyond traditional athlete endorsements by partnering with Stranger Things and signing Eleven as the first fictional athlete in Gatorade’s history. Instead of announcing it through a conventional campaign, we revealed the partnership within the show itself. In the opening moments of the highly anticipated season premiere, audiences saw Eleven drink from Gatorade’s iconic glass bottle—seamlessly integrating the brand into the narrative. From there, we gave her the full athlete treatment: a dedicated product line, limited-edition merchandise, a special glass bottle, a broadcast film, and amplification from Gatorade’s real-world athletes. By treating a fictional character like a sports icon, we blurred the line between reality and fiction—expanding the definition of an athlete. The idea was simple: anyone who trains, sacrifices, and performs under pressure—whether on a field or in the Upside Down—is an athlete. We extended this idea through an omnichannel campaign spanning digital, retail, OOH, social, and broadcast to maximize cultural impact.
