The Challenge
The music industry is at a crossroads, facing an overwhelming surge in 100% AI-generated music that isn't easily distinguishable from human-made music. Deezer reports that 75,000 AI-generated songs are uploaded to its platform daily. An Ipsos study concluded that 97% of people can't tell the difference between a song made by AI or by a human. Listeners unknowingly consuming AI music is taking money out of artists' pockets, with music creators projected to lose $4 billion to AI by 2028 according to CISAC. With this context, Played By Humans was created to address growing cultural anxiety around the livelihoods of artists and the erosion of authenticity and emotional connection in music. The movement was created in response to a global moment where listeners are questioning the origins of the art they see and hear, and music professionals seek to protect their livelihoods and cultural legacy.
The Solution
In response to AI-generated music diverting money from real artists, we established a new music industry standard of transparency. Our strategy shifted away from defensively policing AI toward actively celebrating human craft. The core insight: in a music landscape saturated with AI-generated content, humanity is no longer a baseline assumption. It is a premium, verifiable ingredient. We created a blockchain-backed authentication platform that identifies human-made music and awards it a verified label for album artwork. Artists, labels, and music libraries uploaded their work to receive certification. Listeners could verify what they were supporting. By empowering musicians to show their humanity and giving listeners a way to knowingly choose real artists, Played By Humans turned the looming threat of AI music into an opportunity to celebrate human creativity. To prove that humanity brings something AI can't, Jazz Is Dead created a human-made cover of a Billboard-charting AI hit. The cover debuted at a sold-out live show, with making-of content shot entirely on film to mirror the perfect imperfections of human creativity—a communal experience AI could never replicate. This visceral comparison between the original AI track and one displaying real human craft, experience, and emotion launched Played By Humans into cultural conversation.
