The Challenge

By 2026, the cultural conversation on problematic phone use had caught up with 2degrees. A proposed government social media ban, alongside hit shows like Adolescence, meant that warning about harmful phone behaviours felt like stating the obvious. The "Fairer Phones Project"—a series of activations that had positioned 2degrees as a voice for healthier phone habits—risked becoming background noise in a now-crowded field. The real insight, though, was more nuanced: while society blamed phones for declining mental health, the truth was simpler and more human. Research showed 77% of New Zealanders feel better after calling a loved one, yet we're nine times more likely to scroll than dial. The problem wasn't phones themselves—it was that we'd forgotten how to use them. To maintain the Fairer Phones Project's impact and differentiate 2degrees in the challenger space, we needed to flip the conversation. Instead of amplifying what phones do wrong, we'd champion what they do right: genuine human connection.

The Solution

We created Ring Ring: a deliberately low-tech thumb ring engraved with a loved one's phone number. The insight was physical and behavioural—by interrupting the autopilot scroll, we could prompt a conscious, healthier choice. Packaged as premium wearable tech (complete with spec cards and a cinematic hero film), the ring was a playful parody of tech culture's obsession with optimization. After building anticipation for a breakthrough device, we revealed something beautifully underwhelming: just a ring with a number. The joke landed in the contrast, making a cultural point feel light and shareable rather than preachy. We layered the concept across multiple touchpoints: a nationwide media campaign, influencer seeding that turned advocates into mouthpieces, and bespoke research from a clinical psychologist that gave the story credibility. Most importantly, a competition mechanic—calling 2degrees to enter—made the engagement direct and measurable. Every touchpoint laddered back to one consistent truth: 2degrees champions the positive impact of phones when used right.
