The Challenge
Gaelic Games (GAA) are Ireland's most popular sports and a cornerstone of national identity. Uniquely, they are entirely amateur, played in every town and village across the country, and are heard on the radio in nearly every home on match days. For 60 years, Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh was the voice of these games. His distinctive rhythm and poetic turn of phrase made his commentary unmistakable. When he died in June 2024, Ireland lost a piece of its cultural memory. Many of the people who grew up listening to Micheál are now experiencing memory conditions. Even in a country of just 5.3 million, more than 64,000 people live with dementia, with 11,000 new cases diagnosed each year. In later stages, people can become disconnected from everyone around them, some unable to recognize their own children. The Alzheimer Society of Ireland (ASI) is Ireland’s leading dementia-specific service provider. We saw a unique opportunity to bring together ASI, the GAA, and RTÉ around a single, powerful insight: Micheál’s voice is therapy. Micheál's voice had spent decades becoming deeply encoded in the long-term memories of an entire generation. That same voice could now be used therapeutically to help people living with dementia. By making his lost commentary publicly accessible, we could simultaneously honor a national icon and give families a tool to reconnect with loved ones through shared memory.
The Solution
The Replay—a free online archive of Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh's most memorable match commentary from 1985 to 2010, built in partnership with RTÉ, GAA, and ASI. Working with a leading expert in psychology and memory, we identified that Micheál's commentary could serve as a powerful tool for reminiscence therapy. This uses familiar stimuli, particularly sound, to help people living with dementia access long-term memories. Hearing Micheál's voice acts as a form of mental time travel, reconnecting listeners with who they were when they first heard him. The platform was designed specifically for people with memory conditions, applying dementia-informed UX principles to reduce cognitive load. Each match features the original program cover as an additional visual stimulus, alongside a step-by-step reminiscence therapy guide. TheReplay.ie launched with zero media budget but drove huge earned media reach, engagement with the content, and most importantly, is helping people reconnect with memories and loved ones. Since launch, The Replay has generated inbound interest from sporting organizations in multiple countries seeking to replicate the model with their own iconic commentators, suggesting the approach has global scalability beyond an Irish context. Nursing Homes Ireland, representing over 400 private and voluntary nursing homes nationally, has formally adopted The Replay is a recommended resource for residents, representing a significant shift in how reminiscence therapy tools are sourced and distributed in Irish care settings. The Replay continues to operate as a permanent, free resource with no planned end date. It will be regularly updated with other commentary from Micheál.
